What’s Going On?
Marvin Gaye, was a legend in his own right, who addressed the human condition is America through his music. What’s Going On is regarded as one of the landmark recordings in pop music history, and one of the greatest albums of the 20th century. Things had changed since the album was released, but a lot remained the same. Marvin asked this very moving question decades ago, but it is as relevant today, as it was yesterday.

I never imagined that it would happen over there, but as my journey in New York, unfolded, I realized, that I ran into the hands of a socio-political dynamic, that I was running away from. Because of this, I found myself asking the same question in 2012, that Marvin asked in 1971. What’s Going On?
Because words have meaning, I translated the song on canvas. But the Dutchess County Arts Council, turned “What’s Going On” into “FOCUS”, for a 2012, Poughkeepsie Journal article, because Focus tells its own story on the canvas. It was a message that deeply moved me to stay focussed.
My 2013 exhibit “Soul Survivor: Yearning for truth” which included a lecture Running Away From –isms was inspired by Focus. What started in Amsterdam the Netherlands, continued in New York, USA— I lived and learned that the socio-political dynamic, that I was running away from, was not local but a global phenomenon.
Starting a dialogue and questioning these –isms, that were affecting not only my life as an individual, but suffocating human interaction, and crippling society at large, was something I had to do. This desire gave birth to my Education through Art project: Black, White and Veins. I left New York two years ago, and I am now picking up to continue this project in my new hometown, the capital of Belgium and Europe.

Communication leads to understanding, understanding leads to interaction, interaction leads to a humane society, and humane societies contribute to a better world.
Like America, Europe is at the cross-roads, drifting away from its creed. The –isms floating around infect all of society, and they turn people into prisoners.
This project needs to raise awareness that our common humanity is the key to solving the social ills of our time. As I asked myself, I want people to think, and ask themselves, if it matters. Does the outside really matter ?
I am looking for gallery collaboration, so if this story moves you, let me hear you, let’s talk!
